Black-footed Ferret (Endangered) Since 1992, the Toronto Zoo has participated in the conservation and breeding program for the endangered black-footed ferret (BFF). This native Canadian species was listed as extirpated in 1978, making this breeding program essential to introducing BFF’s back into the wild. Toronto Zoo has bred hundreds of BFF kits for re-introduction in USA, Mexico and Canada and has brought the wild population up to approximately 300. Sadly, some threats to survival including habitat loss and disease still impact BFF populations.
