Grevy's Zebra

Grevy's zebra (Equus grevyi), is the largest of three zebra species, with a mule-like shape, distinctive black-and-white stripes, and large ears. Found in Ethiopia and Kenya (extinct in Somalia and Sudan), they thrive in dry grasslands, foraging in herds with extensive territories. Their stripes serve multiple functions, including temperature regulation, parasite defense, and predator confusion. Threats include agricultural expansion and pastoral livestock depleting water sources, risking dehydration and reducing food availability for the zebra herds.

Over the last 30 years, there has been a 70% reduction in the Grevy’s zebra population, much of which has been attributed to human activity. The Toronto Zoo participates in and contributes to the management and support of Grevy’s zebras through research, husbandry, management, and education. Working with other accredited facilities, the Toronto Zoo helps maintain the genetic health and population numbers of Grevy’s zebras in captivity and in the wild.
